Many viewers take for granted how the lighting effects are achieved in while watching a horror film. In my estimation, lighting is near the top of the list as a critical filming element of any movie, especially horror films where nighttime, moonlight and shadows help to convey fear. This article from the October, 2022 issue of AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER explains how these crucial night effects are created to add that special verisimilitude to the experience.
No kidding! I recently watched some really cheapo horror flicks that had all their scenes in the daytime and it almost certainly because they couldn't afford lighting. Destroys the atmosphere!
