Aickman, Robert. THE WINE DARK SEA. Faber & Faber, 1988.
Peter Straub called Robert Aickman 'this century's most profound writer of what we call horror stories'. Aickman's 'strange stories' (his preferred term for them) are a subtle exploration of psychological displacement and paranoia. His characters are ordinary people that are gradually drawn into the darker recesses of their own minds.
First published in the USA in 1988 and in the UK in 1990 The Wine-Dark Sea contains eight stories that will leave the reader unsettled as the protagonists' fears and desires, at once illogical and terrifying, culminate in a disturbing yet enigmatic ending. For fans of the horror genre Robert Aickman is a must read.
Robert Fordyce Aickman was born in 1914 in London. He was married to Edith Ray Gregorson from 1941 to 1957. In 1946 the couple, along with Tom and Angela Rolt, set up the Inland Waterways Association to preserve the canals of Britain. It was in 1951 that Aickman, along with Elizabeth Jane Howard, published his first ghost stories entitled We Are the Dark. Aickman went on to publish eleven more volumes of horror stories as well as two fantasy novels and two volumes of autobiography. He also edited the first eight volumes of The Fontana Book of Great Ghost Stories. He died in February 1981.

Many well-known horror/sci-fi and fantasy authors got their start in the pages of WEIRD TALES magazine. H.P. Lovecraft, Robert Bloch, Ray Bradbury, Robert E. Howard and others are still being published today. But, did you know that none of them were the magazine's most popular author? That credit goes to a largely forgotten author by the name of Seabury Quinn, whose character Jules de Grandin appeared in dozens of issues of WT for decades. The french detective was a cross between Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot and Conan Doyles' Sherlock Holmes. The stories were well-paced, exciting and always contained some element of horror, monsters or the occult. Readers clamored for more Jules de Grandin stories in "The Eyrie", WT's letters page.
This is the first collection of Seabury Quinn's tales in paperback and is long out-of-print. Each volume contains numerous stories and one, "The Devil's Bride", is a complete novel that ran as a serial in its original form.
The images shown are scans from the collection. With the exception of a couple of minor markings and minor cover stains (one has some bumping on the cover but does not detract from the appearance), these books are in Fine condition. Single copies are easy to find, but a complete set like this is rare.
NOTE: Books are sold as a set only. Price: $72.00 (includes priority shipping and insurance).

Standing almost 16-inches tall at the wings, Great Cthulhu towers over all other figures, inspiring a mixture of awe and terror that is most appropriate in the presence of an Ancient One. Crafted by sculptor Brian Dugas, Great Cthulhu is one of the most intricately detailed Clix pieces ever created. From its open sores to its extra tentacles, the care and artistry that has gone into the creation of this figure is evident everywhere. Working from Lovecraft's description of Cthulhu in the short story "The Call of Cthulhu," Dugas mixed elements from many different sources to create the sculpture. Most notable was his use of real pieces of sea creatures (including shrimp and crab) for various parts of Cthulhu. The overall look of the sculpture is, therefore, very organic?you can almost smell the brine! The tenacious Dugas lifted his brush and turned to his paint to add the details that bring Cthulhu to life. The creature's skin is pallid, befitting something that has spent the last few thousand years in the darkness beneath the ocean. Brian's use of shadows and tones bring Cthulhu's trademark tentacles to life, and he added the sickly ichor and blood dribbling from a couple of superficial wounds that the Ancient One might have suffered in its slumber. The Great Cthulhu is not only a great piece for HorrorClix collectors but for any aficionado of the genre. It'll be offered in limited numbers at the WizKids retail booths at the Origins, Gen Con, and Dragon*Con gaming conventions. Prepare yourself for the most ancient and evil collectible ever produced: the HorrorClix Great Cthulhu!
