Richard Corben is one of the most recognizable names in comics. His airbrush work, his meticulous color separations, and of course, his voluptuous women were a highlight of every publication that wisely chose to print his stories. This in-depth interview conducted by respected journalist/photographer Brad Balfour ran for two issues in HEAVY METAL (July 1981 - August 1981) and coincided with the release of the HEAVY METAL animated film.
EXTRA! An excerpt from Corben's "Bloodstar", an adaptation based on Robert E. Howard's often-reprinted "The Valley of the Worm" (WEIRD TALES, February 1934). It was published as what is generally recognized as the first "self-described" graphic novel in 1976 by The Morning Star Press. John "Brak the Barbarian" Jakes collaborated with Corben on this post-apocalyptic sword and sorcery story with Gil Kane editing.
As you know I'm deep into Corben right now. That look at Bloodstar is especially welcomed. I want a copy of my own someday.
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice to have the complete story between two covers. Looking forward to your Corben posts as he's a particular favorite of mine.
ReplyDeleteI'm a big Corben fan as well, and I useta have this 2-part interview, but I had to ditch almost all of my HMs some years ago. Thanks for posting this so I can read it again!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I've only ever seen a small section of BLOODSTAR, and this post has some pages I've never seen. That creature is an amazing creation-- those eyespots glistening like glass and the warty, wrinkled texture of the body! I wonder if Corben made a model of this first, to use as reference?
Keep up the fantastic work, John!
