Using a part of each other's names, Sol Brodsky and Israel Waldman formed Skywald Publishing Corporation in 1970. Their first publication was NIGHTMARE, with a cover date of December of that year. It was intended as competition for Warren's CREEPY, EERIE and VAMPIRELLA, as well as Myron Fass' line of Eerie Publications. The earlier issues were more reminiscent of Fass' 'zines that Warren's in that they relied heavily on reprints from 1950's pre-code horror comics. These stories were re-touched and re-worked by Bill Everett and Mike Esposito, including taking a pen and ink wrecking ball to Wally Wood's "The Thing From the Sea!". Artists and writers credited on the title page are difficult in some instances to match up with the stories. Mike Esposito is credited by one source as the cover artist, but others won't identify it as his work.

A good first effort that shows promise -- and when a certain Al Hewetson shows up on the scene in issue #8 as Associate Editor, things really start taking off in a "horror-mood" sort of way...
