It's maybe not so ironic that one of the principle players in the founding of the Comics Code Authority was John Goldwater, president of Archie Comics. In the 1950's his wholesome fare of the characters from Riverdale were being buried under an avalanche of horror comics that were, at the time, more popular than superheroes. Along with his cronies, his self-righteous actions spelled the doom of all -- and I mean all -- things horror. Oddly enough, he produced an offshoot imprint, Red Circle Comics, to show everyone how horror should be done.

Under the editorship of Gray Morrow, several issues of CHILLING ADVENTURES IN SORCERY were published. While they can be considered horror-light (as per the code), they still were pretty fair entries, especially as a result of Morrow's input. Fortunately, we have James Warren to thank for resurrecting horror comics as they should be.
