BRAK THE BARBARIAN!

John Jakes is best known for his historical fiction books. He got his start, however, by writing science-fiction. He was also a member of a writer's group headed by Lin Carter called Swordsmen and Sorcerer's Guild of America (SAGA). The Guild was originally formed by Carter, Jakes and L. Sprague de Camp with the purpose of promoting Heroic Fantasy and Sword and Sorcery fiction. Other members included Poul Anderson, Fritz Leiber, Michael Moorcock, Andre Norton and Jack Vance. Carter published the FLASHING SWORDS series of books to showcase the individual authors of the group.

The story posted here today, "The Pillars of Chambalor", is an example of Jakes' work in the Sword and Sorcery genre and features his character, Brak the Barbarian. It was written into a chapter for his first novel starring the character, BRAK THE BARBARIAN, published by Avon Books in July 1968.
