JACK DAVIS MONSTER SKETCHES

Jack Davis was my favorite monster cartoonist. His caricatures could seldom be matched. Pictured here are several original sketches that Jack Davis did for Carla Laemmle's memoir in verse of her growing up around Universal's classic monsters (GROWING UP WITH MONSTERS, BearManor Media, 2009).

Description of auction lots:
Jack Davis Growing Up With Monsters: My Times at Universal Studios, in Rhymes! Illustration Original Art (BearManor Media, 2009). The niece of Universal Studio's own Carl Laemmle checks into a hotel, surrounded by monsters. Jack Davis, no stranger to monsters himself, was the perfect choice to illustrate this book. Using his charming cartoony art style, and drawing upon his many years of experience with both EC horror titles and MAD Magazine, he turned out some fantastic images for Carla Laemmle's autobiography. This piece is signed by Carla (actually "signing" in) and by Jack Davis (on the bottom right). It was produced in ink over graphite on 15" x 10" bright white Bristol board. In Excellent condition.

Davis, Jack:American cartoonist and illustrator, best known for his work on EC Comics in the 1950s and his subsequent work for MAD Magazine. He has also contributed to Cracked, Trump, Humbug, Help!, Dell Comics, Topps Chewing Gum, TV Guide, and a number of other publications. He was inducted to the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2003, and received the National Cartoonist Society's Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996, and the Reuben Award in 2000 . Comic book artist.

Carla Laemmle (1909-2014) watches an unusual game of chess as illustrated by Jack Davis. The autobiography of Carla Laemmle contained many such wonderful illustrations by Davis. This ink over graphite piece is on bright white Bristol board and has an image area of 10" x 7.5". Signed by both Laemmle and Davis. In Excellent condition.

Jack Davis Growing Up With Monsters: My Times at Universal Studios, in Rhymes! "Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein" Illustration Original Art (BearManor Media, 2009). This image seems to relate to the beloved camp classic Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein. Not only is it a fantastic piece, it's a great example of the Frankenstein Monster as rendered by the same artist who did the well-remembered door poster in 1972. Ink over graphite on 15" x 10" bright white Bristol board and signed by both Carla Laemmle and Jack Davis. In Excellent condition.
