SPACEMEN NO. 1 (PART 1)
SPACEMEN
Vol. 1 No. 1
July 1961
Interplanetary Publisher: James Warren
Editor-in-orbit: Forrest J Ackerman
Cover art: Basil Gogos
Even before the first FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND, Forry Ackerman was plotting the birth of a new magazine. Originally to be titled, SCI-FI, then WONDERAMA, it finally morphed into what we know today as FAMOUS MONSTERS. It wasn't until a couple of years later, July 1961 to be exact, when his brainchild first saw the light of a newsstand as SPACEMEN.
The layouts by Harry Chester were close to the same as those in FAMOUS MONSTERS, but all the creatures shown here were from outer space and all the time periods were of the future.
SPACEMEN was ironically so based in the future that it was literally ahead of its time. It preceded the science-fiction boom of the late 60's and 1970's. As a result, interest was not as it needed to be to sustain the magazine. The title folded after 8 issues and a Yearbook.
