Hammer's 1957 version of FRANKENSTEIN (CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN in the U.S.) and DRACULA (HORROR OF DRACULA in the U.S.) in 1958 heralded a revived and revitalized new wave of Gothic horror for moviegoers. Consequently, they mobbed the theaters in droves. Hammer's version of THE MUMMY soon followed, and, shown by the full-page advertisement in the July 13, 1959 issue of MOTION PICTURE DAILY, surpassed even the first two films in box office profits in its opening runs. It would not be long thereafter that Hammer films would be a lasting fixture of classic horror cinema.
