Robert Weine's DAS CABINET DES DR. CALIGARI (THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI) is considered to be the pinnacle of German Expressionist film. That it also happens to be one of the earliest horror films makes it even better for us monster lovers. Initially praised by German film critics, CALIGARI was released in the State in 1921.
This review by Agnes Smith appeared in the June, 1921 issue of MOVING PICTURE WORLD. Calling it "an excellent example of the workings of a morbid, scientific Teutonic mind", Smith goes on to say "you will feel its influence in other pictures that are to come". She never knew how right she was.
