While not as visually spectacular as Basil Gogos' best, Ron Cobb's covers for various Warren Publications were nevertheless striking, especially his re-working of the movie poster for HORROR HOTEL (FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND #40) and the grim visage from DR. BLOOD'S COFFIN (FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND #45).
Here is presented the complete gallery of Ron Cobb's cover work for FAMOUS MONSTERS, MONSTER WORLD and CREEPY. As you can see, the CREEPY and MONSTER WORLD #3 covers are recycled from earlier issues of FM. One wonders if Warren paid him both times . . .
In the November 1962 issue of Famous Monsters (#20) there is an article entitled "Lurk, Burke, Lurk". Page 29 has a photo of John Burke's original character entitled "The Old Caretaker" which I believe is where Ron Cobb got his inspiration for the cover of Famous Monsters #45.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct! Kind of an obscure source for a cover painting, especially when you consider that the image was 25 issues and a few years prior. Oddly, the caption for the cover of issue #45 references an unrelated movie featured in the issue, The Projected Man. Still, I think it turned out to be pretty effective.
