EC perfected the horror comics host in the 1950's, and countless other titles followed suit. Warren resurrected the idea again in the 1960's with his magazine-sized horror comics line that included CREEPY, EERIE and VAMPIRELLA.
When Charlton comics introduced their sizable line of horror comics, they didn't shy away from using a host of some sort in every one of their titles -- Mr. L. Dead, I.M. Dead, Mr. Bones, Winnie the Witch, Impy, Baron Weirwolf, and Countess R.H. Von Bludd, to name a few.
THE MANY GHOSTS OF DR. GRAVES saw its first issue in May 1967. The character of host "M.T. Graves" was created by Ernie Bache and had been introduced in GHOSTLY TALES #55 (May 1966). A year later he got his own title.
Artists included Steve Ditko, who had bailed on Marvel, Jim Aparo, who later worked on DC's BATMAN comics, Vince Alascia, Pat Boyette, Pete (PAM) Morisi, Rocke Mastroserio, Don Newton and Tom Sutton. The cover of issue #54 (December 1975) is one of John Byrne's early professional works.
Writers included Ditko, Steve Skeates, Mike Pellowski, and the often-uncredited staff Joe Gill.
THE MANY GHOSTS OF DR. GRAVES lasted for 75 issues. It won the 1967 Alley Award for Best Fantasy/SF/Supernatural Title.
