When the first issue of this full-size fantasy art magazine appeared on the stands it made a heavy splash. Warren had imported Spanish artists for his illustrated magazines, but this was something entirely different. A lineup of domestic and European artists that appeared in the French publication, Métal Hurlant (translated as "screaming metal"), were imported as reprints by the publishers of NATIONAL LAMPOON with the English version of the title changed to HEAVY METAL. The cast was stunning: Richard Corben, Philippe Druillet, Vaughn Bode, Jean Giraud (aka Moebius) and others created stories that were imaginative, exquisitely executed, and all packaged into a magazine that was in the truest sense of the word, progressive. Included is a preview of Terry Brooks' "The Sword of Shannara".
