For a while, DC found the winning combination of pairing a war story with monsters. Beginning with issue #92 of STAR SPANGLED WAR STORIES, a string of issues contained stories under the heading: "The War That Time Forgot", where G.I.'s not only battled Nazis, but giant creatures like pterodactyls, Nazi goliaths, T-Rex's and super-sized sea turtles, too! Some of these stories were later reprinted under the short-lived title, G.I. WAR STORIES. Eventually, the concept must have worn thin because the comic evolved with introduction of characters such as Joe Kubert's WWI classic ENEMY ACE and the mummy-wrapped UNKNOWN SOLDIER.
