The pipe-smoking, controversial and cantankerous Harlan Ellison passed away on Wednesday at the age of 84. Mr. Ellison's speculative fiction was about as cutting edge as you can get. I would even go so far as to call many of his stories "punk sci-fi" for their glaring, street-smart attitude. I met Ellison once, in Santa Monica's A Change of Hobbit bookstore, only long enough to say hello and that I was a fan. He was gracious enough to acknowledge that. I have many of Ellison's books, but I have to say my favorites are his two volumes of pop culture criticism -- especially of the TV industry of the time -- entitled, "The Glass Teat". Goodbye, Mr. Ellison, and I hope there is a typewriter waiting for you.
