Film fans wrote in to the UNIVERSAL WEEKLY (June 9, 1928) with their overwhelmingly favorable opinion of Universal's latest hit, THE MAN WHO LAUGHS, starring the famous German actor, Conrad Veidt. Veidt's horrifying makeup was devised by genius Jack Pierce, who also had recently done the realistic simian makeup in THE MONKEY TALKS. The fans lauded Veidt, Leni and other aspects of the film, but no where to be found was any comment on Pierce's stunning makeup. True to form in those days, Pierce went uncredited in the film.
