I seem to recall that Dent described Doc's hair as darker than his bronze skin tone, but on some of Bama's covers it looks the opposite. His covers were my first visual depiction of Doc when I was a kid, and I always thought he was wearing some type of skull cap/helmet. Still, he was the definitive artist for the character. I accomplished a life-long goal a few years ago by reading all of the Doc yarns thanks to Anthony Tollin's outfit. As you suggest, it was a bit of a slog at times. I find Dent's prose to be not unlike those magic eye gimmicks from some years ago. It takes a little bit to get it in focus, but when you do, you're sailing. But King was born in 1947, so he probably wouldn't have been reading Batman comics before the middle fifties. Maybe Batman didn't fly, but by that time he was facing bizarre SF-criminals like Mister Zero, even if all the alien menaces didn't come along right away. To be fair, the heyday had passed by the time I was able to really afford to pursue, but even then, I didn't do much. I have a few. The Indy market developed, and I was drawn off by that. Still the in-your-face brashness of the underground comics is refreshing in a time when making me people upset seems to be worse than lying to them. I came across nearly an entire shelf of his novels at a used book store last week, including some of the early Ace's. They sufficiently made but not overpoweringly so. And the covers by Jusko are really good but not great in my opinion. And the extras in each volume were quite meager. This is a lost opportunity I think to give readers solid volumes with copious background materials putting ERB's Ape Man into literary perspective. These books don't rise to that level sadly. It always makes me cringe. There are bloodier more gory sequences but not so many at the gut-wrenching level. Dracula seems more dangerous because he doesn't civilize himself with speech. I read that there's a dispute about if Dracula was written any lines or if Lee just refused to say them. I tend to think he wasn't given that many if any.
