LARRY IVIE'S MONSTERS AND HEROES NO. 2 (PART 1)

LARRY IVIE'S MONSTERS AND HEROES
Vol. 1 No. 2
1967
M & H Publications
Editor and Publisher: Larry Ivie
Pages: 52

The second issue of this early fanzine that managed to make it onto national newsstands shows Larry Ivie's creation becoming a little more professional in overall appearance as page layouts are more organized and a little less slapdash. The cover is evocative and one of Ivie's more inspired efforts.

The contents of this issue focuses less on monsters (Edgar Rice Burroughs' "Monster Men") and more on Ivie's indulgence on his love for adventure serials and his comic strip creation, Altron Boy. Admittedly the Altron Boy work shows some maturity and the serials articles are lively and enthusiastically written.

Also included in this issue is a very early strip by the up and coming fantasy artist, Jeff Jones. A photo of 20 year-old Jones and his then-wife, Mary Louise Alexander (later becoming Walt Simonson's spouse, Louise "Weezy" Simonson) is seen on the editorial page. In a case of the now-familiar term, "gender identity", Jones divorced Alexander in the 1970's and he eventually became known as Jeffrey "Catherine" Jones.
